THE OBSERVATORY

A 3 minute level inspired by Mirror's Edge, made in one week on Unreal Engine 5.

 

Infiltrate an observatory into a confidential construction site to retrieve data from the researchers' computers.

Escape from the observatory with the data recovered by blowing it up behind you, to finish your course clinging to a helicopter in flight.

LEVEL DESIGN - indoor/outdoor parkour

It was a real challenge to create a level long enough to handle 3 minutes of gameplay for a game like Mirror's Edge in only one week.​

To do so, i had to be efficient in every design and production phase without neglecting any steps.​

I've made the choice to merge the mechanics from Mirror's Edge and Mirror's Edge catalyst in order to add more navigation's freedom in the level.

You can find below everything I did to come up with this final result :

  • Conducted research on the structure of the levels already present in the game to provide a level offering the same experience while bringing a touch of originality.

  • Creating moodboards to get visuals on the overall architecture of an observatory and what is there, then visualize what the observatory and the construction site will look like when blocked-out.

  • Conducted additional research on existing observatories to achieve a coherent architecture.

  • Conducted research of intentions.

  • Produced a one-pager document which summarize what the level is gonna be and allow me to present the project to a team before the production.

  • Created 2D plans in order to define a first layout and draw the desired golden path and critical path.

  • Blocked-out the level in order to get a first playable version (V0) of it and start playtest.

  • Fixed the layout and the problems present in the blockout after the playtests.​​​​​​
